Eligibility Criteria:

1. Your group's aims and activities align with the focus of the Roots Fund, aiming to achieve systemic change. This means that a) your group sees itself as contributing in any way to change the stories, power structures or economic conditions that create the injustices you aim to tackle, and b) your group understands systemic change can grow through various smaller scale grassroots efforts, including creating spaces to learn and develop tools to build a more just world.
2. You are based in the UK or Ireland.
3. You have £5,000 or less in your organisational bank account, or you have received £5000 or less to fund your activities in the past year.
4. Your group has been active for at least 6 months.
5. Your group is a grassroots organisation. A grassroots group is an informal, community-led collective driven with focusing on local or specific issues from the bottom up.
   If you are registered we will make you ineligible for this particular pot of funding, but we may direct you to other funders you can apply to, so please get in touch at [email protected]
6. Joint applications are welcome, that is, if you'd like to submit your application with more groups. You would still apply for a £1000 grant.
7. You are not a commercial entity or a business.
8. You are not applying as an individual.
9. Your group has at least 3 members.
10. You are a group being driven by affected communities impacted by the far-right, racism, Islamophobia, Afriphobia, or neo-colonial violence and abuse. This means that affected communities are actively represented in your group and their voices shape its decision-making process.

How do we make decisions?

Edge Fund is a participatory grant-making body. This means that Edge grantees decide how funds are redistributed, guaranteeing that it is those with experience and expertise in campaigning for the causes we support who lead the decision-making process. 4

This process takes place through our Funding Working Group, made up of members of 6 grassroots organisations with the remit to give shape to these guidelines, assess applications and shortlist grantees with the support of the Edge Team.

Our 2026 Annual General Meeting brought together members and supporters to reflect on the past year's achievements, discuss key developments, and set our direction for the future. Thanks to everyone who attended the meeting and brought their questions and ideas to the room.

We thank Gerald, from Queer Migrants Unite, for sharing about their experience of participating in the 2025 Funding Working Group, which was in charge of redistributing our 2025 Roots Fund. We also appreciate the participation from Balraj, from South Asian Liberation Movement, who commented on the Radical Sharing Forum Roots of Resistance, that SALM and other Edge grantees co-organised and hosted in Manchester on 25 April 2026.

📢2026 Roots Fund: Save the dates!

Our Funding Round 18, the 2026 Roots Fund, is just around the corner!

Following the racist riots of 2024, when we first pledged to resource groups resisting the far right, we have witnessed, seen, and felt the surge of a widespread and increasingly organised far right. Yet, in the face of this alarming threat, we have also seen thousands of organisations, local and community groups rise up- interlocking their struggles, building solidarity, and protecting those most likely to face attack.

This year, we have pledged an additional £40,000 to continue supporting grassroots campaigns and organisations confronting the rise of fascism. A fascist force that seeks to intimidate and divide, using working-class people, migrants, racialised communities, trans people, and disabled people as scapegoats—while directing its colonial, genocidal, extractive violence towards the Global South.

The Roots Fund once again aims to sow the seeds for a different world altogether. We have gathered a Funding Working Group composed of 6 grassroots groups that will distribute the £40K to grassroots organisations opposing the far-right: Islamophobia, Afriphobia and the legacies of Colonial violence in the UK & Ireland.

Applications for Funding Round 18 will open on 10th August and close on 31st August 2026.

The Funding Working Group (FWG) is a key part of our Participatory Grant-making Model. It brings together Edge members to review, develop and implement the criteria for our funding rounds with the aim of redistributing grants to grassroots organisations that, because of their political values, size or structure, are unable to access larger sources of funding or receive support from the traditional philanthropic sector. We invite Edge members to learn about our 2025/26 activities and financial accounts, coming plans for Radical Sharing and the Funding Round 18, and to share your views and questions on the organisation's work.

The Edge Fund team also invites members to read and support this motion with a proposal to consolidate the ongoing compensation scheme for Core Group members and develop a policy on Conflict of Interests. The motion will be discussed and voted during the AGM.

Call for expressions of interest:

Looking for groups to join the Roots Fund 2026 Funding Working Group

Edge Fund's 2026 Roots Fund will continue distributing funds to grassroots groups tackling  Islamophobia, racial injustice, and the legacies of British colonialism in the UK & Ireland, and challenging the increased presence of the far right by leading community-led approaches to radical forms of organising. 

To do this, we invite Edge Fund grantees whose missions align with the Roots Fund's aims to join our Funding Working Group (FWG) and become decision-makers in redistributing 40K to other radical grassroots groups. Your group’s expertise will be key for securing a fair distribution of grants. Edge Fund will provide an induction into our Participatory Grant-Making model and into our methodology to collect, assess and shortlist applications. See a detailed timeline below in section D.

Important: Contribution

Groups joining the FWG will not be allowed to apply for the Roots fund, but will receive a financial contribution for their participation in the redistribution of funds equivalent to the grant (£1,000.00).

4. Are led by/or centre those affected Islamophobia, Afriphobia, Racism and the legacies of colonial violence and the rise of the far-right.  

5. Priority will be given to groups who activate in regions that are most affected by the presence of the far-right and/or in areas under-represented among Edge grantees (Wales & Ireland).

As part of the AYNI* programme, we are honoured to welcome our second Radical Sharing online forum of 2026.

On the 2nd of July (18:30-19:45), Queer Migrant Pride Fest will lead a workshop on the Asylum system, its hostility, and the latest changes to asylum law.
